The Memorial of Saint Teresa of Jesus places the mystery of God’s eternal plan beside Jesus’ warning against resisting the prophets. Ephesians begins with praise for God’s plan of adoption and redemption in Christ. The Gospel, however, reveals how human resistance can harden itself against the very wisdom God sends. Saint Teresa’s life demonstrates the opposite response: she allowed grace to draw her into profound friendship with Christ and became a reformer of religious life through prayer, truth, and fidelity. Her mystical theology is deeply rooted in the conviction that God calls the human person into intimate communion. John 14:1–6, John 15:9–17, Romans 8:14–17, and 1 Corinthians 2:9–12 illuminate the same mystery of divine adoption and friendship.

Jesus’ warning about the prophets is ultimately a warning against spiritual resistance. The danger is not merely ignorance but refusing the grace to which one has already been exposed. CCC 27–30 teaches that the desire for God is written into the human heart, while CCC 1427–1429 describes conversion as an ongoing movement toward holiness. Saint Teresa’s prayer teaches that genuine contemplation is not escape from responsibility. It purifies the soul for courageous fidelity. Her reform of Carmel emerged from prayerful discernment, sacrifice, obedience, and love for the Church.

The Eucharist is the sacramental center of this friendship with Christ. CCC 1324 identifies the Eucharist as the source and summit of Christian life, and CCC 1391 teaches that Communion deepens union with Christ. Teresa’s example invites us to recover reverence for interior prayer without separating it from the sacramental life of the Church. Spend time before the Lord, listen to his word, examine your conscience, and bring the fruits of prayer into concrete charity. The deeper the soul enters friendship with Christ, the more faithfully it can serve his Church.
