24 October 2026 | Optional Memorial of Saint Anthony Mary Claret, Bishop | First Reading: Isaiah 52:7–10 | Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 96:1–2a, 2b–3, 7–8, 10 | Gospel: Mark 1:14–20
Saint Anthony Mary Claret’s memorial is deeply missionary. Isaiah announces the messenger who brings good news and proclaims God’s reign; Psalm 96 calls the nations to hear of God’s salvation; and Mark presents Jesus beginning his public ministry and calling fishermen to follow him. The Christian mission originates in Christ’s own proclamation of the Kingdom. The disciples do not invent the message; they respond to the One who calls them. Romans 10:13–17, Matthew 28:18–20, Acts 13:44–49, and 1 Corinthians 9:16–23 all reveal the urgency and universality of evangelization. The Church exists to announce Christ and invite humanity into communion with him.
Claret’s life demonstrates that missionary zeal must be accompanied by fidelity to the Church and personal holiness. CCC 849 teaches that the missionary mandate belongs to the Church by her very nature. Yet evangelization is not simply public preaching. CCC 905 explains that the laity evangelize through witness in ordinary circumstances. The Gospel becomes credible when Christians live what they proclaim. Mark 1:16–20 also reminds us that vocation involves concrete response. The disciples leave their nets and follow Jesus. Grace calls for movement.
The Eucharist is the missionary heart of the Church because it unites the faithful with the One whom they proclaim. CCC 1327 describes the Eucharist as the sum and summary of the faith, while CCC 1397 points toward charity and communion. The Christian who receives Christ is sent to make Christ’s love visible. Today, consider one person who may need a word of hope, an act of mercy, patient listening, or an invitation back to the Church. Evangelization begins wherever Christ has placed us. Receive him sacramentally, remain faithful to his word, and allow–3, 3–4, 47, 51 | Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:5c–10 | Gospel: Matthew 22:34–40 his missionary love to become your own.
