25 October 2026 | Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time | First Reading: Exodus 22:20–26 | Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 18:2–3, 3–4, 47, 51 | Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:5c–10 | Gospel: Matthew 22:34–40
The readings bring the whole moral life into focus through the commandment of love. Exodus reveals God’s concern for the vulnerable: the stranger, widow, orphan, and poor. Psalm 18 responds by calling God the believer’s strength and refuge. Paul praises the Thessalonians because their faith has become visible through transformed conduct and missionary witness. Jesus then summarizes the law and prophets in love of God and neighbor. These are not two unrelated commandments but two dimensions of one covenantal love. Deuteronomy 6:4–5, Leviticus 19:18, Romans 13:8–10, and 1 John 4:7–12 show that love of God necessarily takes visible form in love of neighbor. Catholic social teaching grows directly from this biblical foundation.
Christian love is more than emotion. CCC 1822–1829 identifies charity as the theological virtue by which we love God above all things and our neighbor for God’s sake. Exodus makes the command concrete by demanding protection of vulnerable people. The Gospel therefore challenges any spirituality that remains private. The love of God received in prayer must become mercy, justice, patience, generosity, and defense of human dignity. The Thessalonians became a model because their reception of the Gospel changed how they lived.
The Eucharist is the sacrament of this transforming charity. CCC 1324–1327 teaches that the Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life, while CCC 1396 emphasizes that Communion unites believers more deeply into Christ’s Body. The Eucharist therefore demands that divisions, resentments, and indifference be confronted. Today, ask not simply whether you love God but how that love appears in your treatment of the people around you. Seek reconciliation, practice mercy, defend the dignity of the vulnerable, and allow Christ’s self-giving love to become the pattern of your own life.
